L&B Lighting Guide
Measure with confidence. Explore room-by-room guidance for chandelier sizing, pendant height, spacing, placement, and floor clearance—designed to help you choose and position your light beautifully.
As a general clearance guideline, keep at least 7 ft (213 cm) between the floor and the bottom of the chandelier.
Add your room’s length + width in feet to estimate a starting chandelier diameter in inches.
For metric measurements, add the room’s length + width in centimeters, then divide by 12 to estimate the chandelier diameter in centimeters.
Example:
12' × 14' room (366 × 427 cm) → approximately 26" (66 cm) chandelier
Center the chandelier in the room or over the bed for balanced placement. Alternatively, position it toward the foot of the bed to avoid direct overhead placement.
Position the bottom of the pendant at approximately chest-to-shoulder height when seated in bed, keeping the light source outside your direct line of sight.
Center each pendant over the nightstand. Adjust slightly toward the bed if needed for comfortable reading.
30–36" (76–91 cm) above the tabletop
Choose a chandelier or pendant approximately 1/2–2/3 of your table width.
Table Width → Fixture Width
36" (91 cm) → 18–24" (46–61 cm)
40" (102 cm) → 20–27" (51–69 cm)
44" (112 cm) → 22–29" (56–74 cm)
48" (122 cm) → 24–32" (61–81 cm)
Keep 30–36" (76–91 cm) between the countertop and the bottom of the fixture.
Leave 6–12" (15–30 cm) between each end of the fixture and the edge of the island.
Keep at least 7' (213 cm) from the floor to the fixture bottom in walk-through areas.
For 9–12 ft ceilings, begin with 7'0"–7'6" (213–229 cm) of clearance at 9 ft, then add approximately 3" (8 cm) for each additional foot.
For 15 ft+ or two-story entryways, align the chandelier near the second-floor sightline, approximately 8'0"–10'0" (244–305 cm) above the floor.
